Study Description:
The purpose of this study is to evaluate if the test product(s) cause an allergic-like response (i.e. redness, dryness, tanning, etc.) when applied to your upper back and exposed to a controlled amount of Ultraviolet (UV) light. We will be starting these new studies in Spring 2023! Please take a look at the criteria and study schedule below and if you are interested, complete the fields below and we will call you to be screened. *Note: Submitting an application does not automatically hold your spot on a study.*
Study Requirements:
- Cannot have any known allergy or sensitivity to cosmetics, fragrances and / or toiletries, including sunscreens, adhesives, topical drugs and / or ultraviolet light.
- Cannot have pre-existing medical conditions based on self-report (e.g., adult asthma, insulin dependent diabetes, lupus, multiple sclerosis, eczema on the back or on more than 6% on the body).
- Cannot be taking antibiotics, antihistamines, or corticosteroids within 14 days prior to study start.
- Females cannot be pregnant or breast-feeding.
- Cannot have been diagnosed with cancer within the last 5 years.
- Individuals taking non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), antihypertensive drugs, or any drugs with photo-sensitizing potential may not participate.
Study Schedule:
- 1st 3 weeks of study:
- Monday and Thursday – You will have patches applied to your upper back (visit takes ~5 minutes)
- Tuesday and Friday – you will sit under UV lamps (visit takes ~20 minutes).
- After the 1st 3 weeks, you will have a 10-day rest period where you do not need to come to the lab.
- After the 10-day rest period, you will return to the lab on Monday to have patches applied to your back (visit takes ~5 minutes). Then, you will return on Tuesday to sit under UV lamps (visit takes ~20 minutes). On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of this last week, you will need to return to the lab to have your back examined (visit takes ~5 minutes).
